Date movies

Why are so many gay movies so sad? Sometimes you just want to cuddle up on a couch with your boo, some edibles, and some popcorn and have a nice date night in. What if you want to laugh, or watch a cute romance, or just see a beautiful gay movie where no one dies? There should be more gay movies for that!

We scoured the internet to bring you a dozen movies perfect for a date night with your partner, or with that new cutie you just met and want to get to know better. So grab a blanket big enough for two (or three, maybe you’re poly) and some snacks, turn the lights down low, and put on one of these great LGBTQ+ date movies.

God's Own Country

“God’s Own Country”

This British romance features Johnny, a young man working on a Yorkshire farm and engaging in binge drinking and random sexual encounters with men. However, he starts to change his ways when he meets Gheorghe, a Romanian migrant worker who has a way with his hands. There’s plenty of drama here, but don’t worry, the ending is a happy one.

DEBS

“DEBS”

Angela Robinson’s campy classic DEBS is pure queer women fun. With a cast led by Sara Foster, Jordana Brewster, Devon Aoki, and the unimitatable Meagan Good, there’s fun and women kicking ass around every corner. If your date doesn’t want to watch a fun action/comedy/romance movie about teen girl spies, maybe they’re not the right person for you.

My Favorite Shapes

“My Favorite Shapes”

Sometimes on a date you just want to laugh, and that’s exactly what you’ll do when watching Julio Torres’ HBO comedy special My Favorite Shapes. If you’ve seen Torres in Los Espookys or know his writing from SNL you might already have some idea of what this special is going to be like, but if you don’t, let yourself be pleasantly surprised by this young comedic genius doing what he does best.

Jennifer's Body

“Jennifer’s Body”

Megan Fox as a sexy teen demon who “goes both ways” and makes out with her nerdy friend played by Amanda Seyfried? Yes please! Diablo Cody wrote this classic and Karyn Kusama directed it, and while it wasn’t appreciated in it’s time, it’s built quite the fanbase since it came out. When it gets a little scary, you can hold your person extra tight and let them know that you’d happily fight a high school demon to win their heart.

The Skinny

“The Skinny”

A terrific look into Black queer masculinity, The Skinny is about five queer Brown University graduates who meet up in New York City for Pride. Along the way they explore queer New York, talk about everything from STDs, to condom size, and even enema details. Plus there’s lots of sexy hook ups throughout, so there’s never a dull moment.

The Half of It

“The Half of It”

This sweet and slow-burning romance and coming of age retelling of Cyrano de Bergerac is the second from queer filmmaker Alice Wu, who also did Saving Face. This is a great watch whether you want to get engrossed in a compelling story about figuring out who you are, or you just want something cute to put on in the background while you makeout on the couch.

To Wong Foo

“To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar”

This was the first gay movie I remember loving as a kid (which means I probably saw it too young). Patrick Swayze, Wesley Snipes and John Leguizamo give amazing performances and serve killer looks in this movie about three drag queens who run into some trouble while on a cross country road trip. If I haven’t already sold you on this being a perfect date movie, maybe telling you that it also features a great performance by the legend Stockard Channing as a small-town housewife who wants a bigger life.

The Watermelon Woman

“The Watermelon Woman”

Cheryl Dunye’s hiliarious and insightful mockumentary is really a love letter to Black lesbians, and features some of the best masc of center women in any movie ever. Go with Dunye as she takes you on a journey through Philadelphia’s lesbian scene as well as the history of Black women actors in early Hollywood. Oh yeah, it also features some of the hottest love scenes you’ll ever see in a movie.

The Way He Looks

“The Way He Looks”

This cute coming-of-age Brazilian film follows Leonardo, a blind high school student trying to gain independance from his overprotective parents. Leonardo wants to study abroad and get his first kiss, and when a new student Gabriel arrives and they get paired up in a school project, he just might get a chance to do both.

Underwater

“Underwater”

Who wouldn’t want to watch a truly bonkers deep sea version of Alien where Kristen Stewart gets to wear a suit of aquatic armor and battle bloodthirsty mermaids? Stewart really is a true Lesbian Gaze Superhero in this movie as she rescues her coworkers at an underwater base and even saves the world from an ending you have to see to believe.

Shelter

“Shelter”

Winner of the 2009 GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Film- Limited Release, Shelter is a beautiful romance movie between young LA artist Zach and his best friend’s older brother who comes into town and sweeps him off his feet. Another gay romance with a happy ending, it’s also about chosen family and following your dreams, perfect for a cozy night in with your loved one.

A League of Their Own

“A League of Their Own”

This movie’s not explictly gay, but it’s one of the most lesbian movies you’ll ever find. Sit back and enjoy the based-on-a-true-story tale of the Rockford Peaches, a baseball team of women formed during World World II. It’s great for a date with that cute butch on your work softball team, or with the diehard Madonna fan you met on Twitter. There’s no crying in baseball, but there is kissing on a date to watch A League of Their Own.
