Dating is a good way to develop maturity and understanding of the sacrifice needed for a long lasting relationship.
Every gay man out there knows that dating can be a minefield. There are a lot of things you can and can’t do, and even the tiniest mishap can screw up a date. Plus, with the advent of online gay dating, there are more things you have to consider now. As such, it can help to have some dating advice for young gay guys to fall back on when things become too confusing or complicated. Gay relationships and socialization are already complicated by nature, more so if you want to be intimate with someone who you think is special.
But don’t fret. This quick guide gives out gay dating advice for young gay guys out there who want to be more prepared.
Date for the right reasons.
Don’t do it to be cool or because other young gay guys that you know are already dating. Don’t be pressured into dating because of expectations. A lot of young gay guys don’t date much or at all and that’s fine. Often, gay men who begin dating at a later age have healthier relationships because they have developed more maturity and self-assurance than they had at a younger age.
First impressions DO matter.
If you’re going to show your true self, you also have to put your best foot forward. After all, first impressions do last. Impress the guy you like with something that doesn’t deviate from who you are. If you pique his interest early, you already have one foot in the door.
Actually put effort into the date.
Sure, dinner and a movie is classic, but it doesn’t show much creativity on your part. Furthermore, a movie doesn’t really allow any time to talk and interact, which could make it awkward if you don’t know each other that well yet.
Be up front with him.
Yes, this does need to be said, believe it or not. There are too many stories circulating about broken hearts stemming from misrepresenting one’s intentions. If you love him, tell him. If you don’t love him, tell him.
“Chemistry” is bogus.
You’re a young gay man in your 20s looking to date someone that you have good chemistry with. That’s a worthy goal. But the truth is, serious relationships don’t work that way. They all take time, effort, and patience. Although chemistry can be a good gauge of compatibility for first dates, they’re not the end all be all of determining whether someone is a good fit for you or not. In the long run, healthy relationships are more than just sharing chemistry with someone, and even if you don’t feel that immediate spark, things can still work out if you put the time and effort into developing a relationship.
Go slowly with your relationship.
Good relationships are marathons, not sprints, and many relationships start out too quickly and intensely to last. You can’t run a marathon at full speed. In the early stages of the relationship, resist the urge to talk every single day, to see each other at every opportunity, and to kiss and say “I love you” too soon. Your relationships will be much more likely to thrive and survive.
Don’t be overbearing.
Being possessive is an early red flag. Let him do the things that he’s passionate about without you breathing down his neck. The last thing he wants is someone controlling every aspect of his life, more so if it’s still early in the dating phase. Just because you’re dating doesn’t mean you’re entitled to his time and attention 24/7.
Gay dating can be challenging. Most single gay men turn to gay dating apps to help them find a partner, only to discover they are missing a crucial piece of the puzzle: personality compatibility. It’s one of the most important ingredients of attraction, yet it’s not even a small consideration in most dating apps.
Fun Fact: A study published in 2019 titled “Disintermediating your friends: How online dating in the United States displaces other ways of meeting” found that 65% of gay couples met through dating apps. That doesn’t mean it’s always a good experience, though! This is why we highly recommend premier dating sites like Gay Dating Solutions and My Gay Match.
My Gay Match is a new gay dating site that focuses on matching gay men not only on demographic information but a unique personality measure developed by a psychologist. All members are personally confirmed and carefully screened by their staff to prove that they are real.
