A US Army specialist has come out on national TV.
This past weekend was the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots. To honor Stonewall and the legacy of Pride that followed it, the World Pride Parade in New York City was visited by around 3 million people. And one of those three million was Brion Houston.
ABC News was in Manhattan to record the parade and all of its participants/watchers. During the day, they caught up with Houston and talked to him about life in the military. It’s then that he decided to come out.
After sharing that this is his first World Pride or Pride parade in general, Houston was asked if he was out in the military. He replied, “Not yet — but now I am. This is my coming out!”
The military man from Vermont then received mass applause from the people surrounding him. He then spoke on the brilliance of pride and the honor of being out in the military.
“On the 50th anniversary of Stonewall, there’s no better time to be out in the military than right now. We have the police protecting us here today, which is absolutely incredible.”
The Army specialist had just gotten off a tour of duty in Iraq. He then decided to be brave yet again by visiting New York City and coming out on national television. Thank you for your service, Army Specialist Houston. We’re proud to see you shine.
